Virginia School Counselor Arrested After Alleged Three-Year Sexual Relationship with Now-Former Student

Former Loudoun County Public School Counselor Ann M. Barrett

Police in Virginia have arrested a 42-year-old Virginia school counselor from Virginia for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a former student.

Police have charged Loudoun County Public School Counselor Ann M. Barrett with one count of taking indecent liberties with a child by a custodian. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department said Barrett turned herself in. Barrett is facing a Class Six felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

School officials first learned about Barrett’s alleged relationship with the former student in May 2021. As a result, they immediately contacted the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Consequently, investigators spent several months piecing together details about the alleged relationship. Investigators also reportedly learned that the sexual relationship between the two began in 2013 when the individual was a student.

The relationship reportedly ended in June 2016 after the victim finished his freshman year of college.

Police have not released any additional details about the victim. Prosecutors say this is to protect their identity.

Loudoun County Public School have terminated Barrett’s employment as aschool counselor earlier this year.

Freedom High School Principal Neelum Chaudhry also confirmed that she was no longer actively working at the school.

Principal of Stone Hill Middle School Kathryn Clark also put out a similar statement. Barrett also worked at the middle school.

Loudoun County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Scott Ziegler in October also stated that the district had “failed” students and parents.

Public records show Barrett is currently married. She does not have any criminal history.

Police processed and released Barrett from custody after she posted a secured bond of $10,000. The court has scheduled her first court appearance on November 9, 2021 at the Loudoun County Circuit Court.
