Is New York City Safe For Single Women? Should Women Fear For Their Safety?
Most GenXers remember New York City on the brink of bankruptcy in the 1970s. As a result, the city had a reputation of being a cesspool of filth and crime. Movie studios were cranking out a regular dose of movies showing how dangerous the city was.
Movies like Death Wish and Fort Apache: The Bronx showed the city as a cesspool overrun by violent gangs and prostitutes. Oh, let’s not forget movies like, The Warriors and John Carpenter’s classic, Escape From New York.
This of course, this perpetuated the idea that New York City was dangerous. Even today, there are GenXers and Baby Boomer who refuse to ride the subway.
By the mid-1980s, Mayor Ed Koch started putting the city back on path financially. However, the city’s crime issue caused Koch to lose his 3rd run for Mayor in 1989.
Yet, Rudy Giuliani received all the credit when he became mayor in 1993. Thanks in part to his draconian law enforcement policy that affected entire city of New York. For Giuliani’s credit most of his policies showed immediate results.
Which New York City Neighborhoods Are The Safest?
In Manhattan and Harlem, you can walk around anywhere at any time, without problem.
I know many of you think Harlem is dangerous, but no, not anymore. I have walked around there many times. Veronika and I have walked around there during the day and at night with no concerns for our safety. Everything has always gone without any apprehension. Quite frankly, it is 100% safe.
The vast majority of their neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx are also without any serious security problems. However, there are a few remote corners of Brooklyn and the Bronx where you have to be a little more careful. New York is a million miles away from the era of the 1970s and 80s. It is also safer than Paris.
Is New York Safe For Girls in New York To Walk Around On A Night Out?
Yes, of course, there is no problem. You can walk down the street, take the subway or a taxi with no issue. You will see that you will never feel unsafe. New York is an experience everyone needs to have at least once in their life.
Are There Pickpockets in New York?
Yes, Unfortunately, there are. However, they far fewer than places like Paris, Madrid, or Rome! Pickpockets are Europe’s dirty little secret. I have only heard someone talk about pickpockets in New York once.
