New York Police Arrest Spanish Lifeguard At JFK Airport Trying To Flee The U.S. After Allegedly Raping A Woman At LI Summer Camp
New York Police have arrested Spanish lifeguard Manuel Escalera Ibanez at a religious summer camp in New York. Police have arrested the 23-year-old lifeguard over an alleged rape.
Shelter Island Police dramatically apprehended Escalara Ibanez at JFK airport. The alleged rapist was waiting to board an international flight back to Spain Monday night.
Escalara Ibanez was in the U.S. on a J-1 work visa with Camp Quintent. Camp Quintent is owned and operated by New York Conference of The United Methodist Church.
Police charged Escalara Ibanez with rape and arrested him last week. last week at the Shelter Island camp.
The alleged attack was reported a day before his July 21 arrest. It is unclear who reported the crime to police. However, camp officials and police stressed the alleged victim is not a camper.
Suffolk County District Attorney Charges Spanish Lifeguard With Rape
New York authorities have charged Escalara Ibanez with Felony Rape in the First Degree. Additionally, they have charged him with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation.
Newsday is reporting that an order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim.
The Suffolk County Superior Court also ordered the former lifeguard to surrender his passport. In addition, he must also remain in New York State if gets released from jail.
Police are currently holding Escalara Ibanez at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in lieu of bond. The court has also set Escalara’s Ibanez’s bond at $150,000 cash bail, $200,000 bond or a $500,000 partially secured bond.
Escalara Ibanez traveled from his native Spain to the United States for work. He was in the U.S. on a J-1 visa. A J-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows for participation in work and study based programs in the country.
Camp Issues Statement To Families
The camp also issued a letter to ‘Quinipet Families’ informing them of the alleged disturbing event. The letter said in part:
